FREE KNIT PATTERN: Red Scarf Project Rib of Doom Scarf

I made this easy and reversible unisex scarf for the Red Scarf Project using the Sock Wars Rib of Doom. It’s nice and thick and cushy and long. It requires almost no thought or skill, making it perfect for TV knitting. And it’s easy enough to knit in the dark, so it’s good for the movies or nighttime car rides, too.

But it’s all nice and substantial feeling. And I look like a big dork in this picture. But that’s not the scarf’s fault. You won’t look like a big dork in it, unless you’re a hopeless big dork and you always look like one. And at least you’ll be a warm and stylish big dork.

Anyway, I’m thinking I’ll be making some Christmas scarves with this pattern.

Skill level: easy peasy lemon squeezie

Time: 4 – 6 hrs

2 skiens Valley Yarns Berkshire (100g; 85% wool, 15% alpaca; 141yd) in 16 Burgundy (which any sighted person would describe as “red”), but would be dandy in any red heavy worsted yarn.

US 8 needles

Gauge

Not critical; just use a needle a size or two smaller than the label’s recommendation.

  1. Hey, thanks for the info but for us new knitters who are totally ignorant of knit lingo could you provide a little explanation of all the knit lingo you list in the instructions of each pattern? can ya? Thanks for the great site

  2. Translation:

    Cast on 26.

Row 1: With yarn held in front (as if to purl), slip 1 purlwise. Then work K3 P3 rib across the row until you’re left with one stitch. Knit that stitch.

Row 2: With yarn held in front (as if to purl), slip 1 purlwise. Then work K1 P1 rib across the row until you’re left with one stitch. Knit that stitch.

Repeat both rows until you have 2′ of yarn left, then bind off knitwise (just the normal knit bind-off). Weave in ends.

    Better?

  3. Thanks, yarnmonkey! I’m proud to use it! (I also recommended the International Socks of Doom as the perfect speedy sock pattern on the Shojo Beat site–http://shojobeat.com/diy/princemuffs/)

  4. Hi – have just found your blog and am enjoying your postings and style. I like this scarf — but now my monkey mind has to figure out if it is really the Rib of Doom which is knit curcularly and not back and forth. Looks great regardless. Kabira
